In 2019, I stood in awe and adoration in front of the Miró Tapis in Barcelona.
As I was being drawn into the work, I fell into contemplation of how this magnificent work can inspire more of my own collaborations.
Then I saw Renee Rossouw’s work, with an undeniable nostalgia of Joan Miro’s playful symbolism, bold abstract forms and use of primary colours. Her etchings add depth to form, and texture amidst the quiet spaces.
Renee and I have been in collaboration since 2020. We started exploring textile surfaces, developing art into pattern, pattern onto surface, all in support of a single narrative - a South African collaboration.
When Renee showed me “Opera”, and although it was still a work in progress, we both knew it was the start of a special project.
When we approached Janine and her team at Kaross, they immediately agreed to work with us to create a hand-embroidered masterpiece. Embroiderer Traiza Nukeri, took to the piece with deliberate attention, patience and masterful craftsmanship. She spent months perfecting the rhythm of her stitches to find harmony with the movement of Renee’s Opera.
